St Lucia Rental Car Pickup: 5 Checks Before You Drive Off

Your St Lucia rental car pickup is happening at arrivals or in a hotel car park, you're tired, and you just want to get going. Take five minutes anyway. Film the car, check the tyres and spare, ask three insurance questions, keep your permit and agreement in the glovebox, and save the breakdown number. Those five minutes protect your deposit for the whole week.

St Lucia's roads are beautiful, steep and occasionally full of potholes. Most rental disputes come down to one question: was that mark already there? Here's how to make sure you have the answer before you drive off.

1. Film the whole car, slowly

Walk around the car with your phone recording. Get every panel, all four wheels and rims, the bumpers (especially underneath), the windscreen and the roof. Then film the interior, the fuel gauge and the mileage. Make sure every existing scratch or dent is written on the agreement before you sign. A video with a timestamp settles arguments faster than anything else.

2. Check the tyres, the spare and the jack

Potholes are the most common way a holiday rental gets damaged here. Look at the tread on all four tyres, then open the boot: is there a spare, is it inflated, and are the jack and wheel wrench there? A spare you can't use is just luggage. Also check the AC and wipers. Afternoon showers arrive quickly.

3. Ask three insurance questions

  1. What's included? Basic insurance usually is, but get it in writing.
  2. What's my excess or deposit? That's the most you can lose from a single incident before any extra charges. Deposits on the island typically run from $500 to $1,500, as our car rental cost guide shows.
  3. What's excluded? Local insurance guides list tyres, rims, glass and the undercarriage as common exclusions. On St Lucia's roads those are exactly the parts most likely to get hurt, so know where you stand.

4. Keep the paperwork in the glovebox

Every visiting driver needs a temporary driving permit (residents of OECS countries are exempt). It costs about $20 to $25 and lasts three months, and a good rental company arranges it for you. Keep the permit, your home licence and the rental agreement in the car. Police checkpoints do happen. More on how the permit works.

5. Save the breakdown plan before you need it

Ask one question before you leave: "Who do I call if I get a flat or break down?" Save that number in your phone with the car's plate number. If it happens, pull fully off the road, put your hazards on, call the company before calling anyone else for repairs, and photograph the spot and the damage. Agree the return details now too: where, what time, and the fuel level (full-to-full is normal).

A guest like you

Here's how a handover goes with us. We bring the car to your hotel or the airport, and we walk around it together while you film. Every existing mark goes on the short rental agreement before you sign. We show you the spare and the jack, hand over your driving permit once you've paid, and save our WhatsApp number in your phone in case anything happens on the road. Ten minutes, and nobody argues about scratches at the end of the week.

Quick answers

What should I photograph when picking up a rental car in St Lucia? Every panel, the wheels and rims, the windscreen, the roof, the interior, the fuel gauge and the mileage, ideally on video.

Does rental insurance in St Lucia cover tyres and glass? Often not. Tyres, rims, glass and the undercarriage are common exclusions, so ask before you sign.

Can I pick up at the airport and return the car elsewhere? With many local companies, yes. We deliver free to UVF, SLU and hotels in the main areas, and can collect from a different place than we delivered.

What if I get a flat tyre? Pull off safely, use your hazards, and call the rental company first. Don't arrange repairs on your own.

Is renting a car the right choice for my trip? It depends how often you'll drive. See is renting a car in St Lucia worth it?
