The daily rate you see advertised for a car in St Lucia is rarely what you end up paying. There is a permit every visitor must buy, an insurance excess most people misunderstand, a deposit that surprises travellers at the counter, and fuel priced in EC dollars per litre.
We rent cars here, so here is the honest full-cost picture: rates by vehicle, every extra, and what a real week costs.
Expect roughly $45 to $70 US per day for an economy car, $70 to $100 for an SUV, and $90 to $140 for a seven-seat minivan, before extras. Weekly bookings usually work out cheaper per day than daily hire.

High season, roughly mid-December through April, sits at the top of these ranges and books out early. Low season is negotiable.
Every visitor driving in St Lucia needs a temporary local driving permit in addition to their home licence. It costs around $20 to $25 US and is typically valid for three months. Your rental company can issue it when you collect the car, which is far easier than arranging it yourself.

Basic third-party insurance is normally included in the rate, but it comes with an excess, often several hundred US dollars, that you are liable for if the car is damaged. Reducing that excess to zero costs roughly $10 to $20 US per day.
Three things worth knowing before you decline the extra cover:
Most companies hold a deposit of roughly $500 to $1,500 US on a credit card, released after the car is returned undamaged. The amount depends on the vehicle and the insurance option you choose.
Two practical notes. The hold reduces your available credit for the trip, so factor it in if you are budgeting on one card. And debit cards are often not accepted for the deposit, so travel with a credit card in the main driver's name.
Fuel is sold by the litre in EC dollars, and a week of normal touring in an economy car typically costs $40 to $70 US. Most rentals are supplied full and expected back full.
Distances here are short, but the terrain is not, so mountain driving and air conditioning use more fuel than the map suggests. Stations are plentiful in Castries, Rodney Bay, Vieux Fort and Soufriere, and thinner in between, so top up before long southern drives rather than after.
Adding it up, a typical week in an economy car costs roughly $400 to $560 US all-in: the rate, the permit, fuel, and either the excess-reduction cover or the risk of the excess. An SUV week lands closer to $560 to $780.

Compare that with taking pre-booked transfers for the airport legs and taxis or tours for the rest. Delivery to your hotel is usually the same price or cheaper than airport hire, and it lets you skip driving 90 minutes on unfamiliar mountain roads immediately after a long flight. Many visitors take a transfer on arrival day and start the rental a day or two later.
That also shortens the rental period, which saves money directly. The four that catch visitors out are the excess amount, additional driver fees, young or senior driver surcharges, and late return charges. Ask about all four before you sign.
Also confirm: whether the rate includes unlimited mileage, whether there is a charge for hotel delivery and collection, what happens if you return the car on a public holiday, and whether the spare tyre and jack are present, which is worth checking yourself on the island's roads.
