Gros Islet street party is the best free night out in St Lucia: every Friday, Dauphin Street fills with grills, rum, music and half the island, from around 8pm until the early hours. Getting there is easy. Getting home is where people come unstuck. Book your return ride before you go in, take a taxi both ways after dark even if your hotel looks close, and skip the $90 per person tours, because a taxi for four costs a fraction of that.
We love this party. Fresh fish off the grill, lobster when it is in season, sound systems on every corner, and locals and visitors dancing in the same street. Nothing else on the island feels quite like it.
But we drive people to and from it every week, so here is the part the cheerful guides skip.
Any taxi on the island knows where to drop you. Arrive around 7 or 8pm and it is easy, relaxed and calm enough for families.
The problem is midnight. Everyone decides to leave at once, the narrow roads out of the village jam, and there are nowhere near enough taxis for the crowd. People end up standing on a dark street negotiating fares with whoever pulls up, which is exactly the situation you want to avoid.
Book your ride home before you go in. Agree a pickup time with your driver, or arrange to call when you are ready. That one decision changes the whole end of the night.
Plenty of Rodney Bay hotels are close enough that walking looks sensible. We would still take a taxi after dark, and so would most locals.
One guest staying nearby was told by her hotel's security guard to take a taxi. It looked close, so she and her husband walked. Her bag was snatched and her husband was knocked down from behind. Her own advice afterwards was simple: take a taxi, whatever anyone online tells you.
That is not typical of the night, and the party itself is a community event full of families. But the walk between a hotel and a crowded village after dark is exactly where opportunists operate. A short taxi costs very little and removes the risk entirely.
Entry is free. Food is cheap and cash only, since most stalls cannot take cards.
A taxi from Rodney Bay for up to four people is roughly $20 each way. Typical fares for every route are in our St Lucia taxi rates guide.
Here is where visitors overpay. Organised "street party tours" sell for around $80 to $90 per person. Several reviewers who booked them said afterwards they added almost nothing: there is no ticket to buy, no guide is needed, and drinks and food were not included. Four people on a tour can spend over $300 on what a $40 round-trip taxi does just as well.
You can, and some guests do. Parking is free in most cases, but finding a spot to park is very difficult if you arrive late and locals park near Gros Islet beach are accessable so they are not stuck in the jam leaving. But someone has to stay sober, the roads out are narrow and busy, and you are doing it at 1am on the left. Our honest take on driving in St Lucia is worth reading first.
And remember there is no Uber in St Lucia, so there is no app to rescue you if your plan falls through.
Eat lightly before you go, or eat there. The grills are half the point.
Arrive around 7 or 8pm. Calmer, easier to move, better for families.
Bring cash and leave valuables. Small notes, a phone you would not cry over, no jewellery.
Stay in a group and agree a meeting spot in case you get separated.
Finding one driver you trust for the whole trip makes nights like this effortless, and our guide to finding a reliable driver explains how. For the rest of your week, our best things to do in St Lucia covers what else is worth your evenings.
