Leaving St Lucia: How Early Should You Get to Hewanorra Airport?

Here is the question we get by WhatsApp more than any other, usually the night before a flight: "What time should we leave the resort tomorrow?"

It sounds simple, and then you remember the geography. Hewanorra International Airport sits at the southern tip of St Lucia, your resort is probably in the north or west, and between them lies up to an hour and a half of beautiful winding road. Departure day here is really two journeys, the drive and the airport, and the visitors who plan both leave the island relaxed, with one last coastline show through the window instead of a stressed dash.

Here is exactly how to time it, from the people who drive these runs every day.

The two numbers that decide your pickup time

Number one: airline check-in time. For international flights out of Hewanorra, plan to be at the airport 3 hours before departure for US, UK, Canada and Europe flights, and no less than 2 hours for regional hops. Yes, even from a small airport. When two or three wide-bodies leave in the same afternoon window, which is exactly how UVF schedules work, check-in and security queue together.

Number two: the drive back. Whatever your resort area, the road time is the same as arrival day, and you already know the island does not do straight lines. Add a cushion for Castries traffic if you are coming from the north on a weekday, and a little more in rain.

Put those together and you get your pickup time. We did the math for you.

Pickup time by resort area (for a 3pm flight example)

The table below shows realistic hotel pickup times for a 3:00 pm international departure from Hewanorra, arriving 3 hours early. For a different flight time, shift everything by the same amount.

Where you are staying Drive to UVF Suggested pickup for a 3pm flight
Vieux Fort area 10 to 15 min 11:30 am
Soufriere and the Pitons 45 to 60 min 10:45 am
Marigot Bay 60 to 75 min 10:30 am
Castries 60 to 75 min 10:30 am
Rodney Bay and Gros Islet 75 to 90 min 10:00 am
Cap Estate about 90 min 9:45 am

Two honest notes on that table. First, these timings include a modest traffic cushion, not a miracle one, so on carnival days, cruise-heavy mornings or serious weather, go earlier. Second, notice what a 3pm flight really means for Rodney Bay guests: a 10am pickup, which means breakfast is your last resort meal. Plan the last swim for the morning before, not departure day, and nobody ends the holiday sprinting.

The full route-by-route timings live in our guide to drive times across the island, the same numbers working in reverse.

Booking the ride back: transfers, shuttles and taxis

The same options exist on the way out as on the way in, with one big difference: on departure day, reliability is everything. A late arrival taxi costs you an hour by the pool. A late departure ride costs you the flight.

A pre-booked St Lucia airport transfer is the calm option. You agree the pickup time when you book, the price is fixed, the driver arrives ten minutes early because that is how professionals handle flights, and if your airline reschedules, you message us and we adjust. Most of our arrival guests book the return leg in the same booking, which also means the same driver often waves you off who waved you in. There is something nice about that.

Resort and shared airport shuttle options exist too, and they work, with the usual shared-ride caveat multiplied by departure stakes: the schedule is theirs, not yours, pickups run early to collect everyone, and you spend your last St Lucia hours touring other resorts' driveways. Fine for the flexible, frustrating for families mid-checkout.

Curbside taxis from the resort work as well, at the rates in our island taxi price list, just arrange it the day before rather than hoping one is idling at the gate at 10am. And remember, there is no Uber in St Lucia to summon if a plan falls through, which is exactly why departure day is the day to have one made in advance.

What Hewanorra is like on the way out

Departures at UVF is straightforward: check-in desks, security, then the gate area with duty free, food and drink options, and that unhurried Caribbean airport feeling, as long as you did not arrive late. A few insider notes for the smoothest exit.

Departure taxes for visitors are built into your airline ticket these days, so there is no separate fee counter to budget for, just have your passport and boarding details ready. Spend your last EC dollars before security or at duty free, changing tiny amounts back is not worth the queue. If anyone in the family is a plane spotter, the viewing along the Vieux Fort side is some of the best in the Caribbean, wide open runway against the sea.

And one favorite trick of guests who have done this before: the road from Soufriere to the airport passes viewpoints and photo stops people pay to visit mid-trip. If your schedule has slack, ask about turning the final transfer into a slow scenic run with a stop or two. It is a far better last memory than an extra hour at the gate, and it is the kind of thing our drivers love arranging. Have a look at our island tours to see what the south coast route can include.

Quick answers

How early should I arrive at Hewanorra airport? Three hours before international flights to the US, UK, Canada and Europe, two hours for regional flights. Add the drive time from your resort on top.

What time should I leave Rodney Bay for a flight from UVF? For a 3pm flight, a 10am pickup is right: up to 90 minutes of road plus the 3 hour check-in window. Shift proportionally for other flight times.

Is there an airport shuttle in St Lucia for departures? Shared shuttle options exist, and private St Lucia airport transfers give you a fixed pickup time and price instead of a group schedule. On departure day, that control is the whole point.

Do I pay a departure tax leaving St Lucia? For most visitors it is already included in your airline ticket. No cash surprise at the airport.

Can my transfer driver adjust if my flight changes? With a pre-booked transfer, yes, message the change and the pickup moves. That flexibility is hard to get from a shuttle timetable.

What if I am flying out of SLU, the small airport? Then you are lucky and close, the northern airport is minutes from Rodney Bay. Check which code your ticket shows in our UVF vs SLU guide, people do mix them up in both directions.

The bottom line

Departure day at Hewanorra rewards one decision made early: lock the ride. Three hours for the airline, the honest drive time for your resort area, a driver booked the day before, and your last St Lucian memory becomes ninety minutes of coastline instead of ninety minutes of watch-checking.

Book your departure transfer to Hewanorra now, or add it to your arrival booking, and we will worry about the clock so you can have that last swim in peace.
