Villa Beach Cottages sits on Choc Bay, on the coast just north of Castries and about 65 km from Hewanorra International Airport (UVF). The drive takes 70 to 85 minutes. The fare is $110 for the whole vehicle rather than per person, covering up to three passengers. Families of up to 5 (up to 3 adults and 2 children) add $25 per extra person, while groups of 4 or more adults, 3 or more children, or 6 or more people are charged our group rate, shown when you choose your passengers.
Your driver meets you inside the arrivals hall with a sign showing your name, takes the luggage and has you on the road minutes after customs. The rate is fixed when you book.
Nothing is charged online and there is no deposit.
The drive from Hewanorra to Choc Bay
The route runs north up the Atlantic side. From Vieux Fort the Micoud Highway passes through Micoud and Dennery, climbs into rainforest at Barre de l'Isle, the ridge that splits the island, then drops through the Cul de Sac valley into Castries.
This transfer goes through the city rather than turning off before it, so weekday rush hours, 7am to 9am and 4pm to 6pm, are where time can be lost, along with cruise ship days near the port. We plan the pickup around your flight and the driver takes the best line through on the day.
After that it is a few minutes north along the coast. The entrance is off the coastal road and the property sits at sea level on the sand, so there is no hill, no track and no shuttle between the vehicle and your cottage.
Choc Bay as a local beach
This is what makes staying here different from a resort strip, and it is worth knowing before you arrive.
Choc is a long calm beach used by St Lucians as much as by visitors. Weekends are the giveaway. Sunday afternoons bring families with coolers and speakers, football on the sand and swimming until the light goes. It is friendly, loud in the good way, and a side of the island most hotel guests never see.
You will also meet vendors on the sand, offering aloe, braids, jewellery or a boat trip. Beaches here are public to the high water mark, so this is normal. A friendly no thank you is all that is needed and is taken without offence. If you do want a boat trip, agree the price first.
Around Choc Bay
Castries and the cruise terminals are about ten minutes south, with the Central Market and Morne Fortune above the harbour. George F. L. Charles Airport at Vigie is five to ten minutes away, useful for regional connections.
Rodney Bay, with the restaurant strip, Baywalk Mall and the supermarkets, is roughly fifteen minutes north, and it is the place to do a proper shop if you are self catering. Soufriere and the Pitons are about an hour and a half south, which makes a day trip realistic from this part of the coast.
