Hewanorra Airport (UVF) Guide: What to Expect When You Land in St Lucia

Step 1: Immigration

Follow the flow into the terminal and join the immigration line. Have ready: your passport, your return ticket details, and the name and address of where you are staying. Write your resort name down before you fly, "a Sandals" is not an address, and there are three of them on the island.

St Lucia has been moving its entry paperwork online like most of the Caribbean, so check with your airline before travel whether an arrival form should be completed in advance. Either way, the questions are the usual ones: where are you staying, how long, purpose of visit. Smile, answer, stamp, done. When several flights land together, mostly late afternoons in high season, the line takes longer, which is one more reason not to plan anything tight for arrival evening.

Step 2: Bags and customs

Collect your luggage from the belt and pass customs. If you have nothing to declare, you walk through. Duty free allowances are the standard ones for personal use. One genuinely important local rule that catches visitors out: camouflage clothing is illegal in St Lucia, even for children, even as swimwear. It is the law across much of the Caribbean. Leave anything camo at home and customs will never need to have that chat with you.

Step 3: Cash and SIM cards

Two quick practical stops before you leave the airport, if you need them.

Cash. US dollars are accepted almost everywhere on the island, so you do not need to change money on arrival. There is ATM access at the airport that dispenses EC dollars, useful for buses, market stalls and small tips. SIM cards and data. St Lucia's two mobile networks are Flow and Digicel. If your phone supports eSIM, the painless move is buying a Caribbean eSIM package before you fly, it activates when you land. Physical SIMs are available on island at carrier stores in Castries and Rodney Bay, and depending on the day, at the airport. Resort WiFi is generally decent, so plenty of visitors skip a local SIM entirely and just need maps and WhatsApp, which brings us to the next point.

Save your driver's WhatsApp before you fly. WhatsApp is how St Lucia communicates. If you have pre-booked a transfer, you will have your driver's contact, and airport WiFi plus WhatsApp solves every "where do I go" moment without a SIM card.

Step 4: Finding your ride

Walk out of customs and you are in the meeting area, and this is the moment your arrival either flows or stalls.

If you pre-booked a private transfer, your driver is already there holding a sign with your name, has been tracking your flight, and knows about the delay you had in Miami before you do. Handshake, bags in, cold air conditioning, and you are on the road while other passengers are still forming questions. If you are renting a car, the rental desks and delivery meet-ups happen right at the airport too, though after a long-haul flight we usually suggest taking a transfer on day one and having the rental car delivered to your resort once you have slept. 

Step 5: The drive, and what to expect from it

Here is the fact that surprises almost everyone: UVF sits at the southern tip of the island, and most resorts are in the north and west, between 45 and 90 minutes away by road. It is a genuinely beautiful drive, coastline, rainforest, fishing villages, but it is real, so plan for it. The airport sits beside one of the island's longest beaches, Sandy Beach in Vieux Fort, kitesurfing country, worth knowing if you ever have hours to spare before a flight. The south of the island around the airport is windier than the sheltered west coast where your resort probably is, so do not judge the week's weather by the landing.
