The drive from Hewanorra to the north

The route runs up the Atlantic side of the island. From Vieux Fort the Micoud Highway passes through Micoud and Dennery, climbs into rainforest at Barre de l'Isle, the ridge that splits St Lucia, then drops through the Cul de Sac valley into Castries. From there the coastal highway continues north past Choc Bay and Bois d'Orange.

Castries is where time is lost on weekdays, 7am to 9am inbound and 4pm to 6pm outbound, and Rodney Bay slows in the early evening.

The sea breeze, and when to come

The name is not decoration. The north east trade winds blow across the island most of the year, and they are why a place this close to the equator is comfortable rather than oppressive.

They also explain the two coasts. The Atlantic side, which you drive up from the airport, takes the wind head on, so it is choppy, breezy and good for kite surfing. The leeward west coast sits sheltered behind the hills, which is where the calm beaches and resorts are. Hillside properties catch more breeze than the waterfront, as most guests notice on the first evening.

Temperatures are steady year round, high twenties by day and a little cooler in the evening, so packing changes little by month. What changes is rain and crowds. December to April is drier and busier. May to November is greener, quieter and cheaper, with short afternoon showers rather than days of rain.

That stretch also covers the Atlantic hurricane season, June to November, with most activity from August to October. Most trips in those months pass without incident, storms are forecast days ahead rather than arriving unannounced, and travel insurance is the sensible precaution rather than avoiding the season.

Around Brise de Mer

Rodney Bay is the hub, with Reduit Beach, the restaurant strip, Baywalk Mall and the shops, ten to fifteen minutes away. Pigeon Island National Landmark is a short drive, and Gros Islet holds its street party on Fridays. Castries is around twenty five minutes south, and the Pitons 90 minutes to two hours, so plan a full day for them.
