Habitat Terrace Hotel is in the north of St Lucia, roughly 76 km from Hewanorra International Airport (UVF). The drive takes 80 to 95 minutes. The fare is $132 for the whole vehicle rather than per person, covering up to three passengers. The drive from Hewanorra to the north

The route runs up the Atlantic side. From Vieux Fort the Micoud Highway passes through Micoud and Dennery, climbs into rainforest at Barre de l'Isle, the ridge that splits St Lucia, then drops through the Cul de Sac valley into Castries. The coastal highway then runs north past Choc Bay and Bois d'Orange to Rodney Bay and Gros Islet.

Castries is where time is lost on a weekday, 7am to 9am inbound and 4pm to 6pm outbound, with Rodney Bay slow in the early evening. The hotel sits above the bay, so the last few minutes are a short climb off the main road with the view opening up behind you.

If you are thinking about hiring a car

Worth reading first, because two things catch visitors out.

St Lucia drives on the left. If you are used to the right, the first hour is a real adjustment, and doing it jet lagged on unfamiliar mountain roads in the dark is the hardest possible introduction. That is why plenty of guests transfer in and pick up a car a day or two later.

The second is paperwork. Visitors need a temporary St Lucian driving permit alongside their home licence. We arrange it as part of a rental, insurance is included in our rates, and the minimum age to hire is 25. A refundable cash deposit is taken at pickup, which varies by vehicle, so ask for a quote.

Around the hotel

The north is the busiest part of St Lucia, and this end of it has everything within a short drive.

Rodney Bay, with Reduit Beach, the restaurant strip, Baywalk Mall and the supermarkets, is a few minutes away. Pigeon Island National Landmark is close by, and Gros Islet holds its street party on Friday nights. Castries and the cruise terminals are around twenty five minutes south.

Soufriere and the Pitons are 90 minutes to two hours away, so a full day out, or a more comfortable trip by boat down the west coast.

4. We assign your driver and ask for the flight number about 24 hours before travel if we do not have it. He meets you at arrivals with your name on a sign, takes the bags and drives you north to the hotel, where the fare is paid in cash.
