Marigot Bay Transfers: The Ferry Crossing Guests Don't Expect

UVF to Marigot Bay takes 60 to 75 minutes by road, covering about 32 miles up the via the east coast highway and across the island at Cul de Sac. Booking sites quoting 51 minutes are using algorithms, not experience. And there is one thing they all miss: Marigot Bay has two sides, the road reaches only one of them, and several hotels sit across the water. If yours is one of them, your transfer ends at a dock and a small ferry finishes the job.

Marigot Bay is the prettiest arrival in St Lucia, a narrow inlet of yachts and green hills that James Michener famously called the most beautiful bay in the Caribbean. Getting there is straightforward, provided you know which side you are staying on.

Why 32 miles takes over an hour

There is no highway here. The road from Hewanorra runs the length of the via the east coast highway and across the island at Cul de Sac, single lane for most of it, climbing and winding through villages, then drops down a steep approach road into the bay itself.

Aggregators apply average road speeds to distance and produce 51 minutes. Transfer operators who actually drive it publish 68 to 70. In practice, allow 60 to 75 depending on traffic through the southern towns.

Our drive times guide gives the same honest figures for every resort area on the island.

The ferry nobody warns you about

Here is the detail that matters more than the drive time.

Marigot Bay is split by the water. The main road, the marina and several properties sit on one side. Others, including the Marigot Beach Club, are on the far side of the inlet, and the only way across is a small ferry that shuttles back and forth in a couple of minutes.

It is charming, and it genuinely is part of the appeal of staying here. But it means your driver delivers you and your luggage to a dock rather than a lobby, and you complete the journey by boat.

Nobody should discover this at the end of a nine-hour flight. Check which side your hotel is on before you travel, and tell your transfer company, so the drop-off point is agreed rather than improvised.

Which airport should you fly into?

UVF for almost everyone, since that is where international flights land, at 60 to 75 minutes away.

The small northern airport at Castries is considerably closer to Marigot Bay, roughly 25 to 30 minutes, so if your routing offers a connection into SLU it genuinely saves time here. Weigh that against the extra connection and luggage transfer. Our UVF versus SLU guide explains how to check which one your ticket shows.

Arrival day, practically

Confirm your drop-off point. Road side or ferry side. This is the single most useful thing you can tell your driver.

Agree the fare and currency before you ride if you are taking a taxi from the rank. Fares here are set by route rather than metered, and typical figures for every route are in our taxi rates guide.

Prepare if anyone gets travel sick. The via the east coast highway and across the island at Cul de Sac road bends continuously and the descent into the bay is steep. Our guide to St Lucia's winding roads has the practical fixes.

Plan departure day backwards. Allow the same drive plus your check-in window, and add ferry time if you are on the far side. Our departure timing guide gives the numbers by resort area.

Marigot Bay to the airport: UVF or SLU, and when to leave

First, check the airport code on your return ticket. Marigot Bay sits between the island's two airports, and guests mix them up all the time. Flights to the UK, US and Canada almost always leave from Hewanorra (UVF). Flights to Barbados and the other islands usually leave from George F. L. Charles (SLU) in Castries.

Leaving for UVF. The drive takes 60 to 75 minutes. Most drivers take the east coast highway, crossing the island at Cul de Sac, which keeps you out of central Castries. Add the 3 hours you need at the airport for an international flight:

Your flight leaves UVF at Leave Marigot Bay by
11am 6:30am
1pm 8:30am
3pm 10:30am
5pm 12:30pm
7pm 2:30pm

Leaving for SLU. It's only 25 to 30 minutes away, but SLU is in Castries, so this is the trip where city traffic matters. Regional flights usually ask you to check in about 90 minutes to 2 hours before departure. Leave about 3 hours before your flight. If you fly out between 5 and 7pm, leave 30 minutes earlier to allow for the evening rush.

Staying across the water? If your hotel is on the far side of the bay, add 15 minutes for the ferry and moving the luggage onto the boat. If your pickup is before sunrise, ask your hotel the night before what time the first crossing runs. The boat doesn't wait just because your flight is at 9am.

What the location gives you

Marigot Bay sits roughly midway down the via the east coast highway and across the island at Cul de Sac, which is its quiet advantage. Soufrière, the Pitons and Sulphur Springs are about 40 minutes south. Castries and Rodney Bay are 25 to 40 minutes north.

You are closer to everything than guests at either end of the island, which makes it an underrated base for people who want to actually see St Lucia rather than one corner of it. Our rundown of the best things to do in St Lucia shows what sits within reach.

Quick answers

What time should I leave Marigot Bay for UVF airport? About 4.5 hours before your flight. For a 3pm flight, leave by 10:30am, and add 15 minutes if you're on the ferry side.

How early should I leave Marigot Bay for SLU? About 3 hours before a regional flight, and a little earlier in the Castries evening rush.

How far is Marigot Bay from Hewanorra airport? About 32 miles, and 60 to 75 minutes by road.

Why do some sites say 51 minutes? Algorithmic estimates. Transfer operators who drive the route publish 68 to 70 minutes.

Is Marigot Bay closer to the other airport? Yes, SLU is roughly 25 to 30 minutes away.

Do I need a ferry to reach my hotel? Possibly. Properties on the far side of the bay are reached by a short ferry crossing. Check before you travel.

Can my driver take me all the way to the hotel? To the road side, yes. For far-side properties, the drop-off is at the dock and the ferry completes the trip.

Is the drive difficult? Winding, with a steep descent into the bay. Routine for a local driver, demanding for a first-timer straight off a flight.
