Colibri Cottage is in the Soufriere area on the southwest coast, about 36 km from Hewanorra International Airport (UVF). The drive takes 45 to 60 minutes. The fare is $94 for the whole vehicle rather than per person, covering up to three passengers. Families of up to 5 (up to 3 adults and 2 children) add $25 per extra person, while groups of 4 or more adults, 3 or more children, or 6 or more people are charged our group rate, shown when you choose your passengers.

The drive from Hewanorra to Soufriere

The road leaves Vieux Fort heading west, follows the coast through Laborie and Choiseul, then turns north into the hills. It is sealed the whole way and short in distance, but it climbs and bends almost continuously, so the hour is realistic.

Both Pitons appear above the bay as the road crosses the high ground, and there is a safe place to pull in for a photograph before the descent. The final approach is a hill road, narrow in places, and we send a vehicle suited to the gradient.

What the name means

Colibri is the Creole word for hummingbird, and it is a fair description of what you will find around a garden in these hills.

St Lucia has several species. The small crested ones work the flowers around most properties, and the larger purple throated carib is common in the hills, usually heard before it is seen. Early morning is the time, when they feed before the heat, so the first coffee on a terrace tends to come with company.

Inland from Soufriere the forest reserve holds the St Lucia parrot, the island's national bird, which came close to disappearing and is now protected. Seeing one takes a guided walk and a little luck rather than a casual look, and the rainforest trails towards Fond St Jacques are where people go to try.

Diamond Falls Botanical Gardens beside the town is the easy option if you want birds and flowers without a hike.

Around Colibri Cottage

Soufriere town is a short drive down, with the market, bank, pharmacy, local restaurants and the jetty where water taxis run along the coast to Anse Chastanet and the bays below the Pitons.

Sulphur Springs, the drive-in volcano, is about fifteen minutes away, the Tet Paul Nature Trail a short run south for the two-Piton view, and the Gros Piton trailhead at Fond Gens Libre roughly twenty minutes off. Malgretoute and Anse Chastanet are the nearest beaches by road.

Yes. SLU sits just outside Castries, and the fare from there is $120 for the whole vehicle, covering up to three passengers. What does Colibri mean?

Do people speak English here?

Yes, English is the official language and everyone you deal with will speak it. Kwéyòl, the French based Creole, is spoken alongside it, and a word or two of it goes down well.

Can we see the St Lucia parrot?

Possibly, on a guided walk in the forest reserve inland. It is not a casual sighting, so plan it as a morning out rather than an afternoon stroll.

How far is the town?

A short drive downhill for the market, restaurants and the water taxi jetty. Not a walk you would want to make uphill in the heat.
