Hewanorra Airport Shuttle vs Private Transfer: Is the Shuttle Really Cheaper?

Hewanorra airport shuttle vs private transfer comes down to one detail most comparison sites skip: shuttles are priced per person, private transfers are priced per car. Travelling solo or as a couple, the shuttle usually saves you money. Three or more of you, and a private car costs about the same or less, gets you there faster, and never stops at four other hotels on the way.

Search for a Hewanorra shuttle and you get booking engines with a big Book button and no explanation. We meet flights at UVF every day, so here is the honest version.

How each one actually works

Shared shuttle: you buy a seat, not a vehicle. The minibus fills with passengers from your flight, sometimes from the next one too, then leaves and drops everyone at their hotels in route order. If your resort is last, you see a lot of other resorts first.

Private transfer: the car is yours. Your driver tracks your flight, waits outside arrivals with your name on a sign, leaves when you are ready and drives straight to your door.

On a shared shuttle you will learn a lot about the honeymooners from Ohio. On a private transfer you will learn about the Pitons.

The maths nobody does

Here is what the island's typical published rates look like for the run from UVF to the north, where most resorts sit.

Travellers Shared shuttle (about $25 per person) Private transfer (per car)
1 $25 $90
2 $50 $90
3 $75 $90
4 $100 $115
5 $125 $140

Solo, the shuttle wins clearly. As a couple, you save around $40. At three people the gap shrinks to $15, roughly one rum punch each. At four, the private car is the cheaper option, and many shared operators need a minimum number of passengers to run at all. Prices shift by route, so check yours in our St Lucia taxi rates price list.

What the shuttle costs you in time

The direct drive from Hewanorra to the northern resorts already takes 60 to 90 minutes, and you can see your exact route in our drive times from UVF to every resort area.

A shuttle adds two things on top: waiting for a second flight or stragglers at immigration, then a stop at every hotel before yours. Even resort-run shuttles do this, which is why our Sandals airport transfer guide warns guests the included bus can wait for several flights.

Realistically, budget an extra 30 to 60 minutes. After a nine hour travel day, that is the difference between watching sunset from your balcony and watching it through a minibus window outside somebody else's hotel.

The luggage rule nobody reads

Shared shuttle bookings typically allow one standard suitcase plus one small hand item per passenger. Extras must be declared and paid for, and golf bags or a bulky stroller may not fit once the bus is full. With a private transfer, you tell us what you are bringing and we send a vehicle that fits. Our guide to what happens when you land at Hewanorra walks you through customs to the curb.

When the shuttle is the right call

Take the shuttle if you are solo or a couple with light bags, in no rush, and your resort sits on the main route. If your package already includes one, it is free, so take it.

Before booking, check whether the price is per person or per vehicle, how much luggage is included, and whether it waits for late flights. Our checklist of what to confirm before booking a transfer covers the rest. And remember there is no Uber in St Lucia to fall back on if a shuttle leaves without you.

Quick answers

Is there a shuttle from Hewanorra airport? Yes. Shared shuttles are sold through booking sites and many resorts include one in packages. They are shared minibuses, not a scheduled public airport bus.

Is a private transfer more expensive than a shuttle? For one or two travellers, yes. For three it is about the same, and for four or more the private car usually costs less.

How long does the shared shuttle take? The direct drive time plus 30 to 60 minutes for waiting and drop-offs.

Does the shuttle wait if my flight is delayed? It depends on the operator. Private transfers track your flight and adjust automatically.

Is a round trip cheaper? With us, yes. Round-trip private transfers get a discount. One-way bookings are charged at the standard rate.
