Transfer Between UVF and SLU: Can You Connect Same Day?

A transfer between UVF and SLU airport takes 60 to 90 minutes by road and costs around $85 to $90 per car for up to three people. For a same-day connection, leave at least 5 hours between your scheduled landing at Hewanorra and your flight out of George F. L. Charles. Under 4 hours, book a hotel night instead.

St Lucia is one of the few islands where you can land at one airport and fly out of another the same afternoon. It happens more than you'd think: a cheaper long-haul fare into Hewanorra, then a regional hop to Barbados or Martinique from the small airport in Castries. We drive this airport-to-airport run regularly, so here's how to do it without sprinting through a terminal. Still not sure which airport your ticket shows? Start with our UVF or SLU airport guide.

Why you'd need to switch airports

Hewanorra (UVF) handles the long-haul flights from the UK, US and Canada. George F. L. Charles (SLU) handles regional flights. Right now interCaribbean, Caribbean Airlines, LIAT2020 and Winair fly from SLU to Barbados, Trinidad, Dominica, Antigua, St Vincent, Guadeloupe, Sint Maarten and Martinique, with Barbados by far the busiest route. So if your trip carries on to another island, your next flight may well leave from the other end of St Lucia.

The drive

The airports are only about 20 miles apart in a straight line, but mountains sit in the middle, so the road covers roughly 45 miles. The main route follows the east coast highway through Micoud and Dennery, then climbs over the hills into Castries.

Allow 60 to 75 minutes in light traffic and 90 minutes or more at Castries rush hour, roughly 7 to 9am and 4 to 6pm on weekdays. SLU sits right on the edge of Castries, so city traffic decides your timing, not the countryside.

The connection maths

Step Time to allow
Landing to clearing immigration and collecting bags at UVF 20 to 60 min
Meeting your driver and loading up 10 min
Drive from UVF to SLU 60 to 90 min
Check-in before your regional departure 90 min to 2 hours
Total about 3.5 to 5 hours

Real example: you land at 2:30pm with a full long-haul crowd at immigration, you're on the road by 3:30pm, at SLU by 5pm and comfortably checked in for a 7pm flight. A 5pm departure that same day would be a coin toss. Our Hewanorra arrival guide explains why immigration time varies so much.

The rule we give guests: 5 hours or more, book it. Between 4 and 5 hours, it works with a pre-booked driver tracking your flight. Under 4 hours, stay the night.

Here's why we're strict. Most people on this route have two separate bookings. If your long-haul lands late, the regional airline has no idea, no obligation to wait, and no reason to rebook you for free.

Your three ways across

Private transfer: about $85 to $90 per car for up to three people, more for larger groups. Your bags ride with you, your flight is tracked, and you go straight from one terminal to the other. Compare every route in our St Lucia taxi rates price list.

Taxi from the rank: a similar fare, but you're negotiating a long run at the curb while the clock is ticking. Agree the price and the currency before you load the bags.

Helicopter: about 10 to 12 minutes and roughly $200 per person. The catch for connections: strict luggage limits mean extra bags can follow by road, and there are no flights after dark. We cover it fully in our St Lucia helicopter transfer guide.

Going the other way: SLU to UVF

Arriving from another island and flying home from Hewanorra? You need the drive plus 2 to 3 hours before a long-haul departure. Our guide on how early to get to Hewanorra has the exact timings.

Staying a night between flights

If the gap is too tight, stay near SLU. Small hotels around Vigie and Castries are minutes from the terminal, and Rodney Bay is 15 to 20 minutes away with restaurants and a beach. Your transfer from UVF costs about the same to either. For an early flight next morning, leave extra time for traffic into Castries.

Quick answers

How far is UVF from SLU? About 45 miles by road, 60 to 90 minutes depending on traffic.

Can my bags be checked through between the airports? No. You collect your bags at UVF and check in again at SLU.

Is there a bus between the airports? Public minibuses run between Vieux Fort and Castries, but not with suitcases and a check-in deadline. There is also no Uber in St Lucia.

Do I go through immigration twice? You enter St Lucia at UVF. At SLU you go through normal departure checks for an international flight.

What if my inbound flight is delayed? A pre-booked driver tracks your flight and waits. Whether you still make the second flight depends on the buffer you left.
