The drive from Hewanorra to Castries

The route runs north up the Atlantic side of the island. From Vieux Fort the Micoud Highway passes through Micoud and Dennery, climbs into rainforest at Barre de l'Isle, the ridge that splits St Lucia, then drops through the Cul de Sac valley towards the capital.

Traffic near the city is the variable, mainly 7am to 9am inbound and 4pm to 6pm outbound on weekdays, plus cruise ship days around the port. We set the pickup from your flight so the city is crossed at the best moment available.

Shopping and eating like a local

The advantage of self catering near the capital is the market. Castries Central Market has been running for well over a century, and it is where produce, spices, hot sauce, cocoa sticks and local baskets are sold. Saturday morning is the big day, busy and worth seeing in its own right.

One piece of timing. When cruise ships are in port the market and the craft stalls fill with passengers on a short window ashore, and prices harden. A weekday morning without a ship alongside is a calmer, cheaper shop, and the stallholders have time to tell you what you are actually buying.

For evenings out, the island runs a circuit of street food nights. Gros Islet holds its street party on Fridays, Anse La Raye has its fish fry the same night down the west coast, and Dennery, on the Atlantic side, runs a Saturday fish fiesta that draws more locals than visitors. All are drives rather than walks, and easy to arrange with a driver so nobody thinks about the road home.

Around Castries

The cruise terminals at Pointe Seraphine and La Place Carenage are minutes away, with Derek Walcott Square and the cathedral in the centre, and Morne Fortune above the harbour for the view.

Vigie Beach is the nearest sand, with Choc Bay a little further north. George F. L. Charles Airport at Vigie is close by for regional flights. Rodney Bay is twenty five to thirty minutes north, Marigot Bay about twenty five minutes south, and Soufriere and the Pitons roughly an hour and a quarter.
