St. Lucia Airport Transfer With a Baby or Toddler

For a St Lucia airport transfer with a baby or toddler, the key fact is that St Lucia has no national child car seat law, so most taxis and shared shuttles don't carry one. Book a private transfer and ask for a seat when you book, or bring your own. Then plan the drive like a mini road trip, because Hewanorra is up to 90 minutes from most resorts.

A toddler who has been strapped in for nine hours of travel has opinions, and they share them loudly. We drive families from Hewanorra every week, and the parents who arrive smiling all did the same few things.

Are car seats required in St Lucia?

No. The World Health Organization's road safety profile for Saint Lucia lists no national child restraint law, and the seat-belt law doesn't cover every passenger. On TripAdvisor, a local expert put it simply: "Car seats aren't required here."

That's why parents get caught out. A taxi at the airport rank almost certainly won't have a seat. A shared resort shuttle usually won't either. One family heading to Coconut Bay with a 10-month-old and a 2-year-old found their resort transfer couldn't provide seats at all. Legal or not, you'll want one on a winding road.

Your two options for a car seat

1. Request one when you book a private transfer. This is the easiest option. Tell us your child's age and weight, and the right seat is fitted before we pull up. No carrying it through three airports.

2. Bring your own. Most airlines check a car seat free of charge, so check yours. It's worth it if you'll also use it for tours or a rental car all week. Use a protective bag, because belt carousels aren't gentle.

Whichever you choose, tell your driver about the stroller, travel cot and the suitcase that's entirely nappies. A family of four with baby gear needs a bigger vehicle than a couple, and we'd rather plan for it than play luggage Tetris at the curb.

Shuttle or private car with little ones?

Shared shuttles wait for other flights, stop at several hotels and rarely have child seats. With a baby, that can add an hour to an already long day. Our Hewanorra shuttle vs private transfer guide runs the numbers, and for a family of three or more the private car often costs about the same.

Plan the drive like a mini road trip

Most resorts are 45 to 90 minutes from Hewanorra, and the road winds. Check your exact time in our drive times guide, then:

  • Change nappies and use the restroom before leaving the airport. It's the last proper stop for a while.
  • Feed just before you leave. A full, sleepy baby is a calm passenger.
  • Pack a car bag: snacks, water, wipes, a spare outfit and the favourite toy within reach, not in the boot.
  • Ask for a stop if you need one. Your driver would much rather pull over than have a toddler meltdown.
  • Prone to carsickness? The curves are real, so read our carsick tips before you fly.

Your driver will also have the car cool before you get in, which matters when you're carrying a sleeping baby out of a warm arrivals hall.

Landing late with kids

Many long-haul flights land late afternoon, so a northern resort can mean arriving after bedtime. Pyjamas on during the drive and a pre-booked driver who has tracked your delay make it far easier. Our guide to late-night arrivals at UVF has more.

Quick answers

Do St Lucia taxis have car seats? Most don't, because the law doesn't require them. Pre-book a private transfer and request one, or bring your own.

Is a car seat required by law in St Lucia? No. There is no national child restraint law, but we strongly recommend one for the winding airport drive.

Can a baby sit on my lap in a taxi? It happens, but on a 90-minute mountain road we don't recommend it. Arrange a proper seat.

What's the best transfer for a family with a toddler? A private transfer with a child seat and a vehicle big enough for the stroller. It goes straight to your resort with no shuttle stops.

Book your family airport transfer

Tell us your children's ages and what gear you're bringing. Your flight is tracked, the car is cool when you get in, and you go straight to your resort with no shuttle stops.
